Congratulations to Christopher Adler, winner of our Call for Scores 2016! Christopher's String Quartet is a wonderful three-movement work that explores and combines various musical traditions from Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Albania and northern Europe. We were completely blown away by the enthusiastic response to our first call for scores, and we received 259 individual works for string quartet! While the U.S. was represented by the vast majority of submissions, other participants hailed from Australia, Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the U.K.

About the winner:
Christopher Adler (b. 1972) is a composer, performer and improviser living in San Diego, California. His compositions encompass cross-culturally hybrid forms drawn from contemporary concert music and traditional musics of Thailand and Laos, the application of mathematics to composition, and the integration of improvisation into structured composition. He is a foremost performer of traditional and new music for the khaen, a free-reed mouth organ from Laos and Northeast Thailand. He is a pianist for the nief-norf Project, NOISE, an Affiliated Artist with San Diego New Music, a co-founder of the soundON Festival of Modern Music, and Director of Composition for the nief-norf Summer Festival. He studied with Scott Lindroth, Evan Ziporyn, Steven Jaffe and Sidney Corbett and is currently Professor of Music at the University of San Diego. His work may be heard on Tzadik, Innova, Blue Griffin, pfMENTUM, Rattle, Blue Leaf, Nine Winds, Artship Recordings, Vienna Modern Masters, Traditional Crossroads, Circumvention, and Accretion Records.
