As we approach the start of a new concert season, we thought we'd share a few highlights from this summer's activities. In June, we spent a week at Stanford University as part of the St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar. We had a great time performing with the St. Lawrence Quartet in a Sinfonia by CPE Bach and the Mendelssohn Octet, and we had the opportunity to work with the wonderful Osvaldo Golijov, whose Tenebrae we'll be performing later this season. We're looking forward to returning to Stanford this fall for a residency in their Emerging String Quartet Program.
Congratulations to Christopher Adler, winner of our Call for Scores 2016! Christopher's String Quartet is a wonderful three-movement work that explores and combines various musical traditions from Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Albania and northern Europe. To learn more about Christopher, you can read a brief bio below.
We would also like to recognize four Finalists:
- Jean-Patrick Besingrand - "A Whisper from Space"
- Gianluca Casteilli - "Mythoi"
- Alison Yun-Fei Jiang - "Birds, Reincarnate"
- Max Vinetz - "Permeable Surfaces"
After performing eight string quartets in five rounds over seven days, we are extremely honored (and exhausted...) to announce that we are the 2nd Prize Winners of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition! In addition to our overall prize, we won the R.S. Williams & Sons Haydn Prize for the best performance of a Haydn quartet and the Canadian Commission Prize for the best performance of Zosha di Castri's String Quartet No. 1. Our prize also includes a fully funded future residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
The Tesla Quartet has been named the Marjorie Young Bell String Quartet-in-Residence in the Department of Music at Mount Allison University for the 2016-17 academic year. This residency, funded by the Marjorie Young Bell Endowment Fund, has been established in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mount Allison's first Bachelor of Music degree and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music.
We're happy to announce that we've been selected to participate in the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition. As one of only 10 quartets chosen from an international pool of applicants, the Tesla Quartet will perform during the live rounds of the competition between August 29 and September 4 at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. The rounds will also be streamed live online.
